Here at Digg, we try our best to cover the most important and confounding memes that come across the timeline. But the web is littered with tons of great memes that never quite hit the mainstream and instead just bounce around the weird corners of Twitter or Reddit. Enter our recurring feature, Memes, Ranked.
This week, we've got Kevin McCarthy's ousting, bedbugs invading Paris, Jimmy Butler's new haircut and reactions to the nationwide emergency alert test.
4. Kevin McCarthy
The Meme
After a 216-210 vote in the House of Representatives, California Republican Kevin McCarthy’s term as the 55th speaker of The House came to an end. Matt Gaetz, a Republican representative from Florida, had filed the motion to vacate, and McCarthy became the first speaker in US history to lose the position during a congressional term. One politics professor told CBS that it was “uncharted territory.”
Irrespective of the consequence — or political nuance — the memes quickly poured in, even before McCarthy’s office was vacated.

3. Bedbugs
The Meme
If you use social media or read the news, you’ll be aware that Paris allegedly has a bedbug problem. The tiny insects have reportedly been spotted all over the French city, from cinemas to public transport, and the non-French are worried that some might hitch a ride into their countries via travelers returning from a Parisian trip.
And, because God loves a joke, it’s Paris Fashion Week — so people are also freaking out that the gathering of celebs and trendy individuals will be a bedbug super-spreader event. Naturally, memes abounded.

2. Jimmy Butler's haircut
The Meme
NBA media day kicked off the 2023-2024 season, bringing with it interviews with players on new teams — and, also, memes. The most notable was Jimmy Butler, the Miami Heat superstar who dragged his team to the Finals over the summer, and this week kept his years-long streak of showing up with a new fancy haircut.
This haircut was the one to rule them all. As he said himself, he is emo now.

1. Emergency alert test
The Meme
On Wednesday, October 4, cellphones in the US were subjected to a test of the government's emergency alert system. When there’s going to be a mass event with loud ringing phones — and a variety of hypothetical and real situations involved (classrooms, public transit, theaters, spas…) — what could go wrong?
Examples
That alert on your phone was actually me announcing that we’re going to see more rain in NYC this weekend. My bad.
